"why do republicans hate Jimmy Stewart?"

This was the musical question asked in jest yesterday afternoon by Sam Seder while filling in as host on the Randi Rhodes show.

His question was in regard to the sudden denouncement by Republicans of the time-honoured practice of using the filibuster as a form of last-ditch protest some of the more objectionable aspects of the status quo of the empowered party.

Oliver Willis has posted a re-cap of that famous Jimmy Stewart speech from that wonderful old chestnut, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington. Mr. Smith was considered naive even back then. But I wonder sometimes if he would even recognize the political landscape we currently inhabit.


where are you when we need you most, Mr. Smith?
