Easter is a good time to reflect on these observations. Why indeed is it so difficult to learn from the Gospels? Christ died a violent death yet he opposed all forms of violence. "Peace I give unto you," he said. It is a gift that has to be earned but is often ignored.
The Gospels report Christ as teaching his followers to "love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you so that you may become the sons of your Father in heaven". If that instruction alone were to be obeyed, warfare would cease.
He told people not to judge others "so that God will not judge you". Yet judgmental attitudes prevail. When he preached the Sermon on the Mount, he told the crowds who came to listen: "Happy are those who work for peace for God will call them his children..." Yet, unfortunately, war often takes precedence over negotiation.
