Ocean sunfish are typically found in tropical and temperate climates and can be seen from Alaska to South America, said Bob Foy, a fisheries and oceanography professor at the Fishery Industrial Technology Center in Kodiak.

The whole coast of northwestern America is currently receiving warmer waters, Foy said. Warm water in Alaska is typically associated with El Nino; however, this is not considered an El Nino year, he said.
